The Gruffalo Trail 🥾

Did you meet the Gruffalo?

Thanks to everyone who came along to the Gruffalo Trail on Saturday in partnership with Friends of Southern Necropolis.

A special thanks to The Friends of Southen Necropolis

The Friends of Southern Necropolis seek to share and promote the historical, educational, and ecological assets of the Southern Necropolis Cemetary in the Gorbals, and the on-site heritage trail.

It’s a remarkable testament to the city’s rich and diverse history. Established in 1840, this “City of the Dead” has become an invaluable resource for historians, educators, and nature enthusiasts alike, as well as a sanctuary for local wildlife. The cemetery’s Heritage Trail offers visitors the chance to explore and appreciate the historical significance, educational opportunities, and ecological importance of this unique site. Beyond its historical and educational value, the Southern Necropolis also serves as an oasis of green space in the bustling Gorbals neighborhood. The cemetery’s mature trees, lush vegetation, and tranquil atmosphere provide a haven for a variety of flora and fauna. This ecological diversity is an essential aspect of the site, allowing visitors to observe and appreciate the delicate balance of nature amidst the urban landscape.

On Saturday, BtG families were treated to a meeting with The Gruffalo along the heritage trail! The Gruffalo emerged with his large, hairy body, sharp claws, tusks, horns, and long, poisonous wart-covered nose instantly recognised by everyone! Despite his fearsome appearance though, his friendly demeanor captivates everyone, who quickly learned that there’s more to this creature than meets the eye! Everyone had the chance to take photos with the Gruffalo and have lunch with him too. He loved meeting you all!

Watch this space for our next event.
